Goulburn High School principal Paul Hogan said while it was not an official policy – because schools can't develop policies – it is the school’s response to the department’s policy.
“Today was the official launch to our anti-bullying procedures,” Mr Hogan said.
“At its core we are trying to build resilience in the students - which is one of our three core values of respect, responsibility and resilience at the school.
“Resilience is a basis for young people to develop into strong young adults and cope with life’s challenges.
Mr Hogan said the reducing bullying in schools required the cooperation of the whole community.
“It is about making sure we have community involvement, not just our own community of students and teachers, we need to rely on parents as well to be part of the solution,” Mr Hogan said.
“So we have developed strategies for students who have been bullied, and we are aware that kids make mistakes – so we have processes to support the bully as well. That said, there is always a consequence to behaviour and we expect our student body to be part of the solution.”
He said the bystander and parents also needs a supported role.
“The response of parents also need to be appropriate - violence is never an answer. It is about being part of the solution,” he said.
“It is about communication and keeping everyone informed.”
Goulburn High is a great school, our students are tremendous, we have a great community, we are just looking forward to working together to solve problems that may arise, as it does in any school.”
The school has also recently become a White-Ribbon School to support the ongoing anti-domestic violence campaign.
As such, they are part of the Breaking the Silence Schools Program, which acknowledges that each school and community is unique and which aims to create real generational change to stop violence against women in Australia.
