New traffic lights have been installed at the intersection of Sydney Road and Union Street to improve pedestrian safety.
Safety at the intersection and surrounding area had been the subject of much community discussion.
Member for Goulburn Pru Goward recently announced the work to upgrade pedestrian facilities at a busy Goulburn intersection is now complete.
She said the State Government allocated $810,000 to install a traffic light controlled pedestrian crossing on Union Street at the intersection of Lagoon Street and Sydney Road.
“The improved safety for pedestrians at this intersection will be greatly welcomed by the community,” Ms Goward said.
“Students entering Goulburn North Public School and members of the public accessing nearby businesses now have much safer access.”
Ms Goward said work carried out by Roads and Maritime Services included installing a pedestrian crossing controlled by traffic lights on Union Street, removing the left turn slip lane into Sydney Road and extending the footpath.
“In addition, the existing pedestrian crossings at the intersection were upgraded by installing new pram ramps,” Ms Goward said.
“Audio tactile buttons were also installed to alert vision impaired pedestrians when it is time to cross the road.
“Heavy vehicle access through the intersection has also been improved by providing a wider turning area for vehicles turning left from Union Street into Sydney Road.
“Work started in March and the community was promised the crossing would be operating by June.”
“Roads and Maritime liaised with nearby schools and businesses to limit the impact of noise during work.
“I would like to thank the community for its patience while this important safety improvement work was carried out.”
