In a game that was probably the most exciting game the team has played all season, the Bears defeated Shoalhaven Tigers 50 to 45 on Saturday afternoon.
With several players unavailable, Goulburn’s hopes were not high when the seven players entered the stadium. Shoalhaven Tigers had been undefeated this season in all eight games they had played in the division one Waratah League competition.
To the Bears’ surprise, the Tigers’ star guard Kate Denyer had a foot in a moon boot.
This was to prove a key factor in the final outcome of the game for the Goulburn Bears.
Bears coach Peter Lucas said he was disappointed not to have a full side for the game, but the seven players put in an incredible effort. With Georgia Teague and Georgia Noack both out, the Goulburn women knew they had to avoid unnecessary fouls while playing a strong game at both ends of the court.
“The girls started out strongly and took the early lead,” Coach Lucas said. “They were maximising their possession and their shots were largely on target.”
By the end of the second quarter, there were only a couple of points difference between the two teams.
“It was exciting end-to-end basketball, with Goulburn making few turnovers and errors.
“Shoalhaven’s accuracy was possibly not as high as usual, but this also gave Goulburn a greater opportunity to control the ball.
“The girls were sharing the scoring around and continued to to try and avoid fouls.
“In the final quarter the foul count crept up, but we avoided anyone getting fouled out. Carissa Moroney top scored for us with 16 points, while Jordan Huntley contributed 13 and Naomi Lucas, 12.”
The Bears play Wagga Wagga at Goulburn Stadium on June 1.
