June 20 was International Refugee Day. Current statistics reveal that of the 65.6 million people worldwide forced from home, 22.5 million are refugees, half under 18 years old. Myanmar has over 1 million internally displaced persons plus nearly 500,000 refugees, victims of violence and natural disasters. The Rohingya people are a case in point.
The Metta Development Foundation is Myanmar’s only indigenous assistance agency working with those in need regardless of ethnicity or religion. Check Metta’s website for information or to donate.

PERSISTENCE REWARDED
Patience and persistence have had their rewards in Gunning. After nearly ten years of promoting the idea, the creation of a ‘dump point’ for tourists in caravans or motor homes has lead to Gunning being the first accredited RV Friendly Town in the shire. Gunning is an important gateway to the shire.
It will be important to ensure that taking advantage of this RV Friendly status is complementary to the continued amenity of Gunning as a great place to live.
No less important has been the decision to extend the Gunning Library hours to include 10am to 12pm on Saturdays from July 1. This means that for the many commuters to Canberra and elsewhere, they can become active borrowers at their local library.
Talking of commuting why not borrow from the 200 audio books available at Gunning Library and enjoy those hour long commutes each way each day.
The AGM for Friends of Gunning Library is on Friday, June 30 at 2.30pm in the library.
BOGAN BINGO FUNDRAISER
This Gunning Roos and Rooettes fundraiser for Beyond Blue on Saturday, July 8 is at the Shire Hall. Get tickets by Tuesday, July 4 from Gunning Community Care or at training sessions.
Support the Roos and Rooettes in their home game this Saturday, June 24 against Boorowa.
MUSICAL DELIGHTS
Gunning Focus Group presents “Pleasures and Palaces: a Parlour Afternoon” (piano, flute, soprano) at 2pm, Sunday, July 2, Gunning Courtroom.
Dalton Public School students had a great day with percussion instruments at the Goulburn Conservatorium of Music last week. These musicians of the future were probably heard all over Goulburn!
