A decision on an 11,000-plot Islamic cemetery near Marulan is expected in several months.
In Sydney on Friday the NSW Land and Environment Court heard closing submissions in the long-running case. The Al Mabarrat Benevolent Society is challenging Goulburn Mulwaree Council’s refusal of the development on Highland Way.
The matter has been adjourned in the court several times, much to the council’s frustration. However it heard from objectors, including the council, at Goulburn Courthouse in May, followed by two days of evidence in Sydney.
“(The) council continues its very strong legal argument that this application should be declined. We are expecting the decision to be months away,” a spokesman said.
The council refused the project in December, 2015 on the basis it was not in the public interest and it was deficient in critical planning information.
