NBN says the change, revealed on Tuesday, will allow users access to increased average downloads by 50 per cent via the Sky Muster platform.
The decision to boost data for Sky Muster customers was a result of overall performance and capacity tests which begun last April.
This increased data will be available to retail service providers in October.
“This period allowed NBN to monitor and research the delivery of the service in real world conditions and identify efficiencies which have resulted in an increase to total capacity available on the service,” spokesperson Marcela Balart says.
“We have listened to feedback from rural industry groups and the community and are confident that this announcement is a step in the right direction to improve their internet experience.”
This boost will be available for users during peak time, between 7pm and 1am.
Due to the government’s statement expectations, NBN will continue to set affordable prices, she says. This additional data will be at no extra cost to retailers.
About 2,100 dwellings access the Sky Muster across the Hume electorate with 6,500 eligible to connect.
“We've listened to customers' concerns and acted,” MP Angus Taylor says, describing the news as fantastic.
“And now, for the first time, we expect customers to be able to purchase plans of more than 100 gigabytes a month of peak data.”
He says the data increase is a great first step and cited more plans, solely for businesses, would come.
A connection of 67,000 homes are expected to be completed by the end of next year in the Hume, Mr Taylor says.
There are two Sky Muster satellites, the most recent was installed last October.
Ms Balart says NBN anticipated changes to existing packages, but could not speculate on specific figures.
Sky Muster delivers speeds of up to 25 megabits per second.
