DIGGING FOR GOLD?
Irish songwriter Percy French penned “The Mountains of Mourne” in 1896 including the line “...there’s gangs of them digging for gold in the street”, a wry reference to the manual labour of Irish immigrants in London.
As the annual major fundraiser for Gunning Public School, volunteers including principal Danny Scott are also digging for gold – the Gunning Gold sheep manure. This black gold from under the “Lerida” shearing shed is destined for delivery to Canberrans to improve their generally clay soils.
A further day’s bagging is on this Sunday, July 23 – to help, phone Danny Scott 4845 1129 or text John Duncan (Mr Poo) on 0429 404 931.
YOUTH SPEAK OUT
At a Youth Pizza Night in Gunning, hosted by Gunning District Association, the 21 attendees from Collector, Dalton and Gunning outlined concerns including lack of jobs and public transport, littering and environmental degradation. Three further events for youth will be held this year to tease out more information that will be fed through to Council. These events are supported by a Veolia Mulwaree Trust grant.
