The ‘out and back’ course involves three significant climbs and is probably the toughest local course for racing. On the outward journey riders needed to climb Col du Yurt Farm and Passo dello Pomeroy Station before turning around at Old Bannister Homestead. On the run home riders faced a return climb of Col du Yurt Farm before the fast run to the finish line just passed Chinamans Lane.
Nadine Moroney, Tony Wade, Mark Stutchbury and Chris Berry in the Division 2 field got the racing underway. A fast start saw Tony Wade loose contact early and it wasn’t long before Chris Berry felt the pressure and he was also left to time trial the course. Mark Stutchbury and Nadine Moroney continued to swap off turns as they sped to the first climb of the day.
Nothing separated the two leaders as they descended to the Wollondilly River and onto the toughest climb of the day, the Passo dello Pomeroy Station. Mark Stutchbury narrowly took out the King of the Mountain and stretch out his advantage over the rolling terrain to the turnaround at Old Bannister Homestead. Mark’s lead extended out to two minutes as he crossed the return climb of the Col du Yurt Farm and he maintained this advantage all the way to the finish line.
Veteran, Neils Laugesen returning from a couple of crashes and broken bones joined Andrew Stewart and Southern Highlands’ Tearloch Carr in Division 1. Andrew Stewart managed to stay with Tearloch Carr to the Col du Yurt Farm but it was the youthful Tearloch who proved the better hill climber and opened up a commanding lead by the turn around. Neils Laugesen may have been playing catch up but as a strong time trialist he was never far away. Shortly after the turnaround Neils closed in on Andrew Stewart and powered ahead.
Young Tearloch Carr continued to stretch his lead on the return leg and ran away with a comfortable seven minute win over the chasing Neils Laugesen with a tiring Andrew Stewart a further four minutes back.
Big thanks to the volunteers – Phil, Mrs Bush, Chris B, Ted, Wayne and Fiona.
Next Saturday it is the final round of the Interclub Series on Canyonleigh Road, Sutton Forest.
While Goulburn is not in contention for overall honours Jacob and Callum Emmerton are a chance to take out the individual honours.
