A lost, lonely vote trying to find a home
The same-sex marriage postal survey has stirred a wave of heated, divisive discussions that have split the country into three. Those who are voting ‘yes’, those voting ‘no’ and those who have walked away from the topic altogether. The true weight of these results are yet to be determined in Parliament, but it is safe to say that the sweet smell of democracy is most definitely in the air for Goulburn. One woman found an extra survey in her letter box and placed a call out for the owner’s correct address on Facebook. Another person added she also received extra mail. We hope that if others accidentally receive another person’s postal survey, there is some kind of attempt to return it. Pushing your own agenda by opening another person’s mail is (at least legally) not the way to go.

Cleaning up our streets
The council’s operations staff have been out and about doing their best to keep our streets pristine. A report to Tuesday night’s council meeting stated that the parks team undertook a large clean-up of Sydney Road, from the bypass to Union Street, in August. They collected five tonnes of rubbish and also took the opportunity to do some tree maintenance. In outlying areas, Cr Peter Walker, who lives at Middle Arm, has often praised resident Wendy Chapman, often seen picking up rubbish littering the roadside. Mayor Bob Kirk says another lady does the same along Highland Way, on the way to Tallong. There’s nothing like a little civic pride!
Grace Millsom takes off
The Goulburn Recreation Area is attracting a healthy number of events, according to a council report. The Braidwood Road facility had 83 bookings in August, with about 4019 people attending. It included an “uninterrupted month” of indoor sports and some new events, including a motorsports clothing sale over three days. “The Grace Millsom Centre has been receiving fantastic feedback from the private and public sector and we are seeing an increase in this type of activity,” the report stated.
