The city once hosted regular tournaments, but on October 7 the sport will make its return.
Event organiser Larry Daniela said Goulburn’s central location had made it a logical choice for attracting boxers from around the region and further afield.
Headlining on the card and fighting for a belt is Goulburn boxer 26-year-old Braydan Fenwick. He is fighting in the 64kg weight division against Leigh Taylor, also 26, from Victoria. Both these fighters are experienced in competition fighting.
Another Goulburn boxer on the program is Angus Fife in the 72kg division, who is making his debut against another novice Rajeem Kennedy of Sydney, who trains at Father Dave’s Old School Boxing Gym.
“This is a family friendly event and we are hoping that plenty of Goulburn and district people families will come out to the Veolia Arena to watch not only the local bouts but also the visiting competitors from as far away as Victoria and Taree,” Daniela said.
“The posters that are around town said that the doors would open at 5pm however because of the number of fighters who have nominated, doors will open at 2pm, with the first fight scheduled for 3pm.
“Included are several fights between female boxers.
“We are hoping that this will be the first of many more boxing contests. Veolia Arena is large enough to hold a large audience and provide room for the competitors to warm up. We are hoping too that we will see more local people take up the sport, which has been traditionally offered by the PCYCs throughout NSW.”
Amateur boxing is a variant of boxing practised at the collegiate level at the Commonwealth Games as well as many associations. Amateur boxing bouts are short in duration, comprising three rounds of three minutes with a one minute interval between each round. This type of competition prizes point scoring blows, based on the number of clean punches landed rather than physical power.
Canteen facilities will be available at the Arena. Tickets at the door are $35 for adults, $20 for 6 to 12-year-olds (5 and under free).
