In fact this was the first year Tyrrell had coached the newly formed U17 Goulburn Workers rugby league girls team, now set to play the Gungahlin Bulls in the grand final this weekend.
The majority of the tight knit team had no previous rugby league background, a perquisite which failed to translate in their strong Canberra Region Rugby League (CRRL) season this year.
With only two losses and ten wins, the team only slightly trails behind their rival on the ladder.
However this is not the first time the two teams have clashed with Tyrrell hoping to break the unlucky streak.
“I think the girls fitness, speed and agility have got them here. They are able to take on information and act it out,” he said.
“Having the younger ones go so far, and enjoy it so much, helps promote the league.”
He cited senior players such as Elly Hazelton, Shakira Tyrrell and Ella Greig as an instrumental force to the unity for some of the more inexperienced players.
The U17 girls match will begin at 4.45pm at Seiffert Oval on Sunday.
Thirty four teams and over 550 boys and girls will battle it out for the CRRL junior grand finals this weekend.
