The legacy of French writer and playwright Jules Verne is one that has transcended our normal understanding of reality for well over 150 years.

He was one of many who bent the scopes of time and location, catapulting into the seemingly impossible yet equally relatable realm of science fiction.
Alongside his well known works such as Around the World in Eighty Days and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, there is his 1882 fantasy play Journey Through the Impossible.
And, as part of the Steampunk Fair this year, the Lieder will bring Verne’s imagination to life in a comedic and thrilling performance.
“The play is very much in the steampunk tradition,” Jennifer Lamb of the Lieder Theatre said. “It is quite fantastic in the literal sense of the word. It should be a lot of fun.”
The story follows George who, haunted by the scientific accomplishments of his mad father, meets a doctor who can help him realise his burning ambition.
The duo then travel the centre of the the earth, bottom of the sea and up into space by consuming a magic potion.

The journey itself is woven together by the magical unknown creatures and diverse characters who shape the unorthodox path into discovery.
Costumes and sets will also mirror the Steampunk theme of a traditional yet modern setting with touches of eye-popping exploration.
This is the first time the Lieder has performed a Jules Verne play, with plans for the large production beginning this time last year.
Ms Lamb said the theatre had, however, tackled science fiction and mystery plays in the past.
“Jules Verne normally wrote things which were possible or logical, I suppose in a science fiction way,” Ms Lamb said. “But this one isn’t.”
The main cast will be made of seasoned performers Ann Waterston, Blake Selmes, Shane Daley, Brian Hill, David Rayner and Steve Routley. In total about 30 performers ranging in age will be part of this production.
The show will run from October 13 until 28 and open on the same day as Steampunk. It will continue every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
The Steampunk Fair is an annual event which celebrates the quirky and unique subculture which will also celebrate Jules Verne and his past works.
