Having never been able to previously crack into the top 10 at Sydney’s Valvoline Raceway, Peter Granger exceeded even his own expectations last Saturday night, winning the opening NSW Wingless Sprints Club Championship round in convincing fashion.

Making numerous changes to his NSW # 61 Lee & Thomas Auto Electrical and Cooling supported Maxim car during the off season, Granger, whose only previous feature-race success in the class was last season at Nowra Speedway, was immediately in strong form from the get-go, winning his opening heat race and coming from position 10 in his second heat race to finish fifth, placing him third highest in points.
Lining up on the outside of the front row for the 25-lap feature race, due to the top four highest point scorers being inverted, Granger managed to get the jump on pole-sitter Jason Davis at the drop of the green flag; however, a subsequent restart allowed Davis to get one back on Granger to take the early lead. Davis’s lead didn’t last long, though, as Granger managed to overtake his rival by the completion of the opening lap in turn four, going on to lead the remainder of what was a disjointed feature race to take a well-deserved victory.
“Valvoline Raceway is without a doubt one of the country’s toughest tracks, so to have been able to earn the win amongst such a strong field is a very satisfying feeling – not only for me but my whole team,” Granger said. “I have to say a huge thanks to my crew chief Paul Chapman. We had a plan of attack for the whole night and we were very confident with the car, which allowed us to be in the position to take the win.
“Last season’s maiden win was very rewarding but it finished as a declared race, so be able to win the way I did from beginning to end and then be able to greet the chequered flag and then celebrate on the podium in front of all of the crowd made it even more special.”
Peter Granger will be back in the driver’s seat this Saturday night at Goulburn Speedway, in the second Club Championship round. This is the opening night for the Goulburn Speedway Season and will feature Adam Brand and his 34Q in the Legend Cars. The Adam Brand concert is at 3pm racing from 6pm.
