Last weekend members of The Hume LAC Target Action Group conducted a joint operation with staff from the Police Transport Command. Also assisting were drug detection dogs. In short, the operation was designed to provide high visibility policing throughout our licensed premises and railway stations in the Southern Highlands and Goulburn sectors. Our police actively patrolled railway platforms and trains as they entered the station. The teams also went through various licensed premises. The results were disappointing.

In the Southern Highlands sector, three people were issued with Court Attendance Notices, two for possession of cannabis and one for possession of a knife. A further two were issued cannabis cautions.
In Goulburn, two people were issued Court Attendance Notices for possession of cannabis, and a male was charged with fail to quit licensed premises, assault police, malicious damage and offensive language. Another male was charged with fail to quit and resist arrest and finally, another cannabis caution was issued.
As we approach the summer months, people need to be on notice that similar operations will continue. If you are using and carrying illicit drugs, expect to be stopped searched and referred to court. If you are intoxicated, argumentative and violent, expect police to accommodate you. Your police are committed to ensuring that your licensed premises are safe and anyone with the sole intent of getting intoxicated is likely to end up with significant fines or end up in a cell.
We have engaged regularly with patrons and licensees. As a result of the weekend, a couple of licensees will now be having follow up meetings and reminded of their obligations regarding responsible service of alcohol. Whilst the majority of licensees are valued members of the community and conduct their businesses responsibly, those that take short cuts or fail to adequately manage intoxication levels within their establishments can expect close scrutiny from the police and other enforcement agencies.
Too many people suffer harm through alcohol and drug abuse. So there is a collective responsibility from licensees, their staff and patrons to work together to ensure everyone can have fun nights out, without going to extremes.
