An exciting partnership between Goulburn Regional Art Gallery and Essential Energy is seeing electrical pillars across the CBD being brightened up with newly commissioned works from artists Virginia Arregui, Lynne Flemons and Kathy Orton.
These regional artists were engaged through an expression of interest process in 2016, with the challenge of creating a work that could be digitized and printed on an anti-graffiti laminate vinyl to wrap the pillars.
Kathy Orton, Goulburn, chose to focus on etched streetscapes of Beppo Street and the iconic Jason’s Beardery.
Lynne Flemons, also from Goulburn, used imagery from Lake George as inspiration, creating works reflecting the trees and skylines, while Virginia Arregui, from Bundanoon, has created works featuring bikes.
Director of the Goulburn Regional Art Gallery Gina Mobayed said the aim of this project and the continuing public art program is to “engage the public in creative practices and break down the idea that the arts only has a place inside gallery walls.”
“We are continuing our effort to bring creative, cultural works outside and into the streetscape. I’d like to thank Essential Energy for this great opportunity to add more colour to our CBD, and look forward to hopefully working with them on further creative projects in the future,” Ms Mobayed said.
Mayor Bob Kirk was impressed with the first electrical pillars to be wrapped, saying it adds to the look and feel of the CBD.
“The individual artworks add something different to each area of the CBD, and create something that is far more visually attractive in comparison to the standard electrical pillars,” Cr Kirk said.
The pillars have been wrapped with the support and skill of Signage One and electrical safety guidance from Essential Energy, with the project to be completed this week. Keep an eye out for further works to be undertaken in the CBD late this week.
