Councillor Sam Rowland raised questions on the low figure during the October 17 council meeting.
Growth, strategy and culture director Louise Wakefield responded to Cr Rowland’s straightforward question –“what’s going on?”
“We did not have the resources this month.. [there has been] a lot more dog and cat activities, this required attention from the rangers,” Ms Wakefield said. “We are however maintaining a presence in schools pick ups and near the hospital.”
The council report revealed no patrols were carried out in general parking areas, school zones, the hospital and the council car park.
There were no infringements issued in the CBD, school zones, hospital zone and council car park in September.
Factors identified in the report include a combination of staff absences, training and high priority animal matters.
“To account for the reduced opportunity, a mobile presence was utilised whenever possible to ensure the rangers remained visible throughout the parking zone,” the report noted.
Seventy four investigations were completed in total.
Customer requests to council were taken up by animal related incidents (62) followed by abandoned vehicles and articles (14), parking (11), overgrown land (4) and illegal dumping (4). There were no customer requests for abandoned trolleys.
A total of 48 dogs and two cats were impounded. Nine dogs and one cat were euthanised. Twenty two dogs were returned to their owners and seven dogs were sold. A further 10 dogs and 2 cats were transferred to animal welfare organisations.
There are currently four council rangers. Ms Wakefield said there were enough rangers but work would have to be prioritised moving forward.
