Police said traffic was banked up for 2.5km after the vehicle caught alight shortly before 2pm Sunday on the Hume Highway’s northbound lane, near Tiyces Lane.
The driver pulled over when they noticed smoke emerging from the car. This in turn caused a small blaze on the grass verge which was quickly controlled.
Police and RFS attended the scene. The driver was not injured, police said.
Traffic was banked up for 2.5km but both lanes have since been re-opened. Police said flow was slowly returning to normal.
