The parcel of land in question is to the immediate west of Prince St along the Wollondilly Walking Track.
The Geographical Names Board is now calling for public comment on the proposal by Goulburn-Mulwaree Council to name a reserve in Goulburn after the late Mr Brown.
Chair of the Geographical Names Board Narelle Underwood said feedback is being sought on the proposal to name the reserve – the Ken Brown reserve. It would be accessed via Albert St.
Mr Brown served the local Goulburn community and its surrounds for 44 years.
He began his career in local government in 1946 at the age of 15 as a junior clerk.
Mr Brown continued to progress into other roles within Goulburn Council, including serving as City Manager from 1979 until his retirement in July, 1990.
On his retirement, Mr Brown was awarded the Goulburn Citizen of the Year award.
Mrs Underwood said the board is encouraging community comment before it considers the proposal.
“It is important that place names reflect the character and history of the local area and community,” she said.
“We want to make sure everyone has an opportunity to provide their feedback on the proposed name.”
The decision to name the reserve after Mr Brown was first proposed at the October 17, 2017 Goulburn Mulwaree Council.
A report to the meeting said Mr Brown’s family were in favour of the proposal.
“There will also be a small on-site ceremony upon formal approval, dedication and gazettal of the reserve,” the report said.
“Features identified to be included nearby include seating, a proposed playground and a crossing of the river at the Gibson Street road reserve.”
At the meeting, Cr Peter Walker welcomed the move.
“I know Cr Margaret O’Neill will be chuffed with this decision and the family is very satisfied that Ken will be recognised,” Cr Walker said.
Details of the proposal can be viewed and submissions lodged on the Geographical Names Board’s website at www.gnb.nsw.gov.au.
Alternatively written submissions may be lodged with the Secretary, Geographical Names Board, 346 Panorama Ave, Bathurst, NSW, 2795. The closing date for submissions is January 15.
