A former Goulburn Post managing editor has passed away on the south coast.
Simon Terry died at Merimbula on Thursday, November 9.
Mr Terry was The Post’s manager for about 10 years until about 1980.
Former photojournalist, Leon Oberg, described him as a “fair boss.”
“He was an outstanding journalist who superintended the transition from letter press to offset printing, a new technology which at the time was a traumatic changeover,” he said.
Mr Oberg said Mr Terry championed a more modular layout that greatly improved the newspaper’s presentation.
“That was his legacy. The Post had a lot of success under Simon,” he said.
Mr Terry came to the newspaper following his time as the Wagga Daily Advertiser’s chief of staff.
Longtime solicitor Don Elder and his family were close friends when both lived at West Goulburn.
“He was very involved in the community, particularly Goulburn Mulwaree Rotary Club, of which he was a past president. He was a very outgoing and friendly type of fellow who was highly competent at his job,” Mr Elder said.
In 1980 Mr Terry bowed out of newspapers and moved to Wagga Wagga where he managed a motel and later built the Garden Court Restaurant with wife, Janet, in the Botanical Gardens. The couple sold this in 2011.
Mr Terry had been living in Merimbula for several years with second wife, Lyn. He is also survived by children Paul, Katrina and Fiona and eight grandchildren. His funeral service will be held at Clavering Park Crematorium Chapel, Wolumla, (between Bega and Merimbula, this Friday, November 17 at 2pm.
