Starting in the Breadalbane village riders headed out toward Gunning and the steady climb to the rail bridge at the top of the Cullerin Range before the turnaround and the fast run back to the finish line in the village. A favourable tailwind for the outward leg turned into a cross headwind for the return journey.
The A Grade peloton tore up the course averaging just over 40km/hr for the 23km race. You could have thrown a blanket over the field in the sprint finish and it was only after the judges referred the video replays that the riders could be separated. Callum Emmerton was awarded the win narrowly winning from Glen Apps second and Jacob Emmerton third.
It was a similar finish in B Grade with new rider Grant Moller winning from Keith Foley-Chell and Mick Redman.
In the largest field of the series 11 C Grade riders signed on for their race. A group of eight riders made it through the turn well ahead of the chasers. Anthony Field applied the pressure on the climb back to the rail bridge with only David Rowe, Shannon Apps, Mark Stutchbury and Wayne Bensley able to respond. As the leaders crossed the range John Reardon, David Carmichael and Chris Berry formed a chase group and while the leaders were never out of sight they were unable to bridge the gap. The leaders continued to work together until the end of Poplar Straight when David Rowe, Shannon Apps and Anthony Field managed to break away on the sharp pinch just before the flat run into the village. In the sprint finish Anthony Field took out line honours narrowly from Shannon Apps and David Rowe.
Chris Bushellini won D Grade from new rider Belinda Smith who rode a fantastic first up race.
Overall series winners were very close in all grades – Callum Emmerton took out A Grade on a count back from brother Jacob, Gary Sheehy was the B Grade winner, Mark Stutchbury won in C Grade also on a count back and Fiona Berry the D Grade champion.
Big thank you to the volunteers from the ever reliable timekeeper Mrs Bush, Chief Commissaire Phil Bush, traffic controllers Josh Daniel and Fiona Berry.
Gary Sheehy and Cameron Roberts in the lead/follow cars.
Next Wednesday racing is on Range Road for the Barbeques Galore Handicap. Sign on by 6pm at the corner of Chinamans Lane and racing starts at 6.30pm. New riders welcome.
