The annual Goulburn Mulwaree Mayoral Charity Golf Day continues to be a favourite event on the sporting calendar for serious golfers as well as those who just enjoy a hit with mates and a day off work.
This year 30 teams of four players participated in the fun day where players or teams could pay for little cheats to help them improve their score and maybe pick up one of the dozens of prizes on offer.
The day started with a shotgun start, where teams were sent to each of the 18 holes and at 9.30am the first teams on each of the tees hit off.
At the first and 10th hole teams could opt to have one of the experienced local A graders, Jake Mitchell who is a trainee golf professional or Michael Gerstenberg with his powerful swing take the hit or hits for them for a price.
Friday was a warm day and refreshments were in demand as teams waited their turn to play the holes. With 30 teams on course at once it was inevitable that there would be hold ups and plenty of time to quench one's thirst with soft drinks water or a cool ale. Cr Margaret O'Neill who was wearing her Challenge Foundation hat did her best to get the players to part with some of their money to quench their thirst.
Also out on course the Brethren Rapid Response team was providing a barbecue lunch from which the proceeds would also go back to the nominated charities for the day Challenge heading the list followed by the Loco Roundhouse Preservation Society and the Uniting Church Drop In Centre with the proceeds from the raffle going to Riding For the Disabled.
The golf day involves numerous council staff to coordinate and bring charities and donor organisations plus accepting nominations for the day. Their golfing knowledge and accounting expertise allowed for the quick calculation of results.
This year's net winners were a team from Boral including Shane Burton, James Colling, Adam Wallace and Brad Subotic. Goulburn Golf Club regulars, Annie Gilmore, Alison Croker, David Laurie and Paul Croker won the gross score trophy
Major sponsor Holcim also has teams of employees participating in the day. At the presentation that followed the day on the Goulburn Golf course, Mayor Bob Kirk announced that Holcim is remaining as the major sponsor of this fun day the for some years to come.
The aim of the day is to raise money for various local causes and this year the major beneficiary is the Challenge Foundation.

While the total amount raised was not yet known Brendan Hollands, council’s corporate services director said the day appeared to have raised a considerable sum for the charities involved.
Mayor Kirk, who teamed with the same three players, Brian Swift, Bryan Webb and Michael O'Neill, for quite a few years said that despite the amount of work that goes in to coordinating the day it is a great social event, which provided a considerable amount of money for the chosen causes.
"Goulburn is a very generous community and in the last month alone, we have had several major fundraising events to benefit local organisations,” Mayor Kirk said. “I would like to thank all the businesses and individuals for their very generous support.”
