At about 10am on December 4, the Crookwell SES received a call from distressed residents that the caravan had been picked up by the wind and smashed into their house.
SES Controller Robert Bell said it was a “freak wind.”
“A tunnel of wind put the caravan onto the roof of the house and kept going causing other damage,” Mr Bell said.
“This property has significant damage to walls, roof, a toilet block and a shearing shed, but no one was injured.
“We were called to assist in re-tarping the roof and we spent most of the day there. We were onsite until 6.30pm.”
Over the weekend the Crookwell SES crew were called out to about seven other jobs, mostly involving blocked drains.
“I can’t remind people enough to clean their gutters - it causes so much damage when the water builds up as a result. It goes into the ceiling and we have to puncture the ceiling to get it out,” Mr Bell said.
Fellow SES member Nic Orchard said the wind caused a lot of damage around Tuena.
He described an area of about 2km long by about 400m wide, across the river where the wind left a trail of destruction. This area is often used by campers.
“It was like a mini cyclone had hit,” Mr Orchard said.
There was major there was flooding and roads were closed around the southern area of the Upper Lachlan Shire. The Pejar Road was temporarily closed as was the Sandy Creek Road near Wyangala.
For emergency assistance in floods and storms call the SES on 132 500. If it is life-threatening call Triple Zero.
