The boy, believed to be 11, was pulled from the pool unconscious and in cardiac arrest at a house in Haberfield about 5pm.
It is understood the boy hit his head on the side of the pool while playing in or around the water.
Family members provided CPR to the boy while waiting for ambulance paramedics to arrive.
A CareFlight rescue helicopter attended the scene, with a group of Christmas partygoers clearing nearby Ashfield Park so the helicopter could land close to the house.
The boy was taken in a critical condition to Sydney Children's Hospital at Randwick in an ambulance, so paramedics could continue providing treatment while on the road.
