The students had a special assembly in the school hall at which they launched their Positive Behaviour for Learning program.
TOPIC
Goulburn Public principal Sharyn Cox said the program was all about creating respectful, responsible and safe learners in the school.
“Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is all about thinking what is expected of you,” Ms Cox said to the assembly.
“We have rules in the school but expectations are all about lifting yourselves up to be better learners and people.
“We all have to work hard to be better - not just kids but grown ups as well.
“It is about positive behaviours - making a choice - I could do this - or I could do that and if I choose the negative behaviour - life won't be great because then I will miss out on doing some things.
“If, however, I choose the other way of behaving, other people will get to have a good time and I will too.”
Ms Cox said PBL is about expectations and the school had developed four expectations, around which positive behaviour is based.
The students had chosen these expectations themselves.
“At this school it was your decision. You were part of choosing these expectations,” Ms Cox said.
Ms Cox explained that at Goulburn Public School, the expectations are that students and teachers display safe, respectful, responsible learning behaviours.
“This means being safe, even before school - on the bus or walking and also all day.
“It means hands off, being kind and being in the right place at the right time,” Ms Cox said.
“It is also about being respectful. That is what you are doing now at this assembly by paying attention.
“If you turn and talk to the person next to you - you are not showing respect.
“Out there in life it is always good to show respect to others because if you show respect to them they will show it back to you.”
She said the third expectation was about “being responsible.”
“Being responsible is about always asking yourself what is my job and am I doing it right now?” She said.
The fourth expectation is about learning.
“We are all learners and we are learning all the time – so we have to choose what we are learning,” she said.
“You can choose to listen and learn or be distracted.
“Choosing to listen will give you much more choice in life.
“Today has happened because the teachers care about you and meeting these expectations.”
At this point the school’s mascot Puppa Roo came into the assembly to the excited children. He came in to launch the program with the the cutting of a special cake that resembled a book.
The students chose Puppa Roo as their special mascot.
“He is fabulous and he belongs to the whole school community,” Ms Cox said.
After the assembly, the students enjoyed a sausage sizzle.
They also participated in a range of activities including an obstacle course that required skills such as balancing and throwing.
This week Goulburn Public School students had an instructive assembly session on displaying positive behaviour. They then had a sausage sizzle and enjoyed various activities set up around the school.
