A large flow of residents have taken to Facebook to ask: “is your water brown too?”
The Post asked the Goulburn Mulwaree Council just what is going on and is it safe to drink?
They replied that the water is indeed brown, which has been caused by high levels of manganese flowing into the river from recent storms.
But they assured us it was safe to drink – just ‘not to wash your whites for a couple of days.’
The official statement:
“Goulburn is currently experiencing water discolouration due to high levels of manganese from the Wollondilly River,” a council spokesperson said.
“Water affected by high rates of manganese will appear to be brown, but the water is safe to drink.
“The council is in the process of treating the water supply for this issue, and colour levels should return to normal in the coming days.
“The council would advise anyone who notices water discolouration to avoid washing white clothes for the next couple of days.
“If you notice discolouration in your water, you may need to run your taps for a few minutes until this subsides. If you have any issues please do not hesitate to contact the council on 4823 4444.”
Theories scotched
One caller rang the Post to suggest that the cause of the brown water was that there were divers in the water supply tanks cleaning them.
Others thought it was caused by the council flushing lines.
One person on social media thought the cause of the brown water in her bath was her child being ‘super dirty.’
“I was bathing my two year old and thought she must of been super dirty as we had been outside playing, but it was the same today,” the woman said.
