A 22-year-old male motorcyclist has died in a single-vehicle crash in Queanbeyan late Thursday evening.

Emergency services were called to Munro Road in Crestwood just after 10pm following reports a motorcycle had crashed into a sign.

The rider died at the scene.

Munro Road resident John Bamford was first on the scene after hearing the accident while in his driveway.

“I just heard this crunching noise,” Mr Bamford said.

“Then the sound of the bike revving without anyone in control of it.”

Mr Bamford rushed to the accident site only metres from his home and called triple 0.

He began CPR and was soon joined by his wife Karen and another neighbour, Anthony Eramo.

They took it in turns to perform CPR until NSW Fire and Rescue officers arrived minutes later.

Mrs Bamford said the rider was not wearing a helmet and was found in only jeans and a pair of shoes. Although she said one of his shoes had been flung several metres.

A visibly shaken Mr Bamford said the rider remained unresponsive from the time he reached him.

“There was nothing we could do for him,” he said.

“If he was wearing a helmet I reckon he would still be alive.”

The accident occurred on a bend in Munro Road.

Mr Eramo added the street, while only a 50 kilometre per hour zone, often had issues with people speeding.

Officers from Monaro Local Area Command attended and established a crime scene.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page.

The death brings the NSW road toll to 22.
