Country rock band Brewn are gearing up for a performance at the club.
From straight-up country, to jazz and soul, to funk, the five members of Brewn come from a range of musical backgrounds.
This melting pot of musical influence gives the band their distinctive sound.
Their collaborative songwriting process means music is worked through a range of influences, emerging with its own distinctive characteristics.
The unique mix makes for a refreshing sound, says lead singer Mick Bond.
“It basically comes from all different angles,” Bond said.
“We write songs to suit the country rock genre, and just be ourselves and come up with this sound that’s different from everybody else.”
Performing together for nine years, the band have reached the stage where they’re like a family.
It all began at Tamworth, where Bond began busking. After working with a few cover bands, Brewn began to branch off on its own.
In 2010, the band launched their first EP, Bear Country Road. The recording won the Canberra Country Music Festival award for the Best EP.
The following year saw the release their first full album, Rusted On. From there, the band have continued to record and perform.
All from blue-collar backgrounds, most members hold down ‘real jobs’ alongside performing.
The new year brings with it some exciting opportunities for the band.
After working with James Blundell for the past few years, they will be touring with him over the course of the year, as well as with Tania Kernaghan.
Tamworth and the Sydney Country Music Festival are also on the list.
“We’re quite excited about 2018,” Bond said, “Brewn’s got some really cool things about to happen.”
Supported by Country Rocks, Brewn is part of a broader movement to revitalise Australia’s live music scene.
The company is seeking to support live country music through creating a touring circuit, as well as giving artists access to promotional opportunities critical to their success.
As founder, Bond sees the company as a way to create opportunities for Australian live music to be performed and enjoyed.
“That’s what we’re trying to do is to create more interest from the public to come along and watch theses artists,” he said.
With their Goulburn home looking likely to be the Workers Club, Braidwood is already on the circuit to the south.
Bond hopes artists will eventually be able to tour an established circuit stretching to Cooma.
Back in Goulburn, the Workers Club will host a different artist each month, supported by Country Rocks. A DJ specialising in country music will add an additional spin to the event, meaning punters can kick on into the wee hours.
