The district was well represented across the teams with about 30 player spots occupied by hockey players from the Goulburn and Crookwell area. Add to that another half dozen people as technical officials and managers.
Several players were representing in more than one grade in this competition that has brought many of the best indoor hockey players in the country together for the championship series.
In the Open Men’s ACT team there were Aaron Kershaw, Jake and Ben Staines. Local Open women players for ACT were Sassie Economos, Naomi Evans, Shelley Watson, Kate Dooley and Jess Smith.
Under 21 ACT men’s players were Jake Staines, Ben Staines, Kurt Devlin, Hayden Shawyer and Lachlan Norberg. The local ACT women’s players were Aleisha Price, Renae Robinson, Maggie Anable, Mikayla Evans and Hannah Shawyer.
In the Under 18s we have Hayden Shawyer, Lachlan Norberg and Jacob McGregor playing for ACT mens and Jayde Della, Maggie Anable, Holly Evans and Emma Baxter playing for ACT in the women’s team.
In the under 13 boys Joshua Skelly was in the ACT team and Craig Fletcher in the NSW team. Three local girls represented NSW in the under 13s, they were Sophie Pagett, Mackayla Jones and Ella Smith.
Among the technical officers there were Darrell Chambers, Toni Shawyer Kristy Robertson and Stefan Hause. Michelle Anable and Ola Norberg were team managers. This list is not definitive as there were other Goulburn district people helping out throughout the tournament including stadium manager Scott Cooper.
This week we have the under 15s taking centre stage, the only grade where the local district is not represented, according to the listings that the Goulburn Post has received.
This shouldn’t deter people from dropping into the Veolia Arena to take a look at the games. Some of these players could be junior representatives of the future and maybe qualify for Hockeyroos or Kookaburra selection in a few years’ time.
The pool finals for the under 15s are on Friday starting at 4pm with the last game starting at 7.30pm.
Besides NSW and ACT boys and girls teams, there are teams from Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia and Tasmania all competing for National Championship honours.
The classification games will be held Saturday morning with the girls’ grand final starting at 1.30pm followed by the boys at 2.45pm.
The under 18s start training on the basketball stadium courts on Saturday with the opening game between NSW boys and Tasmania at 12.30pm Sunday.
