Goulburn High School teacher Ross Mackay said that after a trip to Universal Studio, where they rubbed shoulders with The Simpsons, took a ride through Jurassic World and visited Hogwarts, the students were transferred to San Diego to meet their host families.
“After a restful day with their hosts where the students caught up on some much needed sleep, Monday brought a visit to the world famous San Diego zoo,” Mr Mackay said.
Following their visit, the students went on a shopping street at the Las Americas Premium Outlet centre.
“ [It is] quite literally a stones throw from the Mexican border,” Mr Mackay said.
“We could see ‘the wall’ and Tijuana beyond it.”
On Wednesday the students visited Coronado Bridge, before taking a ferry ride to the “quite simply huge USS Midway aircraft carrier”.
“Students got to experience life for a real life Maverick, getting up close and personal with F-14 Tomcats, just like Tom Cruise,” Mr Mackay said.
“Flying in the simulators on board was a highlight for some of the students.”
Mr Mackay said the students were looking forward to Thursday, where they would get to join an American school for the day.
A little bit ahead of GHS in the schedule, the Mulwaree High School students have spent the last 10 days hosted by students from El Capitan High School.
Mulwaree High School teacher Steven Dunn said the experience was a rewarding one for the students.
“At night and on weekends our students got to experience life in an American family,” Mr Dunn said.
“Our students even got to spend a day at their hosts school, following them around from class to class.”
Mr Dunn said the students would now move on to San Francisco where they will do a boat cruise of the bay, which would include a lap around Alcatraz Island and the Golden Gate bridge.
“Our final day will be a bus tour of the city of San Francisco including a walk across the Golden Gate Bridge.”
