Goulburn had four teams in the Women’s Indoor Masters State Championships, played last weekend from Friday to Sunday. The Goulburn 1 side played in the tough division one competition and finished third in their pool but won their play-off against South Sydney, who were third in their pool.
The division one grand final was fought out between Nepean 1 and Sydney East.
Goulburn didn’t have a team in division two. Goulburn 2 contested division three and after the pool games Goulburn was ranked second in pool A after winning three of their games and losing one. Illawarra South Coast 3 was ahead of Goulburn on goals for and against, but they and Newcastle who were ranked third also had one loss in their pool games.
In pool B, North West Sydney 1 went through undefeated and Central Coast 1 had sustained one loss.
On Sunday morning, Goulburn 2 defeated North West Sydney five goals to four which put the home side into the grand final against Illawarra South Coast 3, who had in the first game of the morning, for the division, defeated Central Coast 1 three goals to one.
Goulburn was first to score and took a one goal lead into the second half but Illawarra answered back with a well placed hit. The game became controversial when an Illawarra goal was disallowed after one umpire decided that the goal had been hit from just outside the circle and Goulburn players appealed the decision by the other umpire. After a brief discussion between officials the call went against Illawarra. With only a couple of minutes left on the clock Goulburn put away a cracking shot past the keeper to seal the game. Coach Leon Robertson said after the game he was pleased with the way the Goulburn women listened to his instructions and learnt from their errors. In division four Goulburn 3 and 4 both finished out of finals contention with four points in an enjoyable weekend of indoor hockey.
Next weekend Goulburn hosts the Men’s Indoor Masters Championships.
