Bruce, who retired in 2011 from the Upper Lachlan Shire Council to care for his wife Wendy during her cancer treatment, was a well known and respected member of the community, having been a long serving member of the Gunning Shire Council prior to the shire merger.
At the time of writing, funeral details are not yet known. It is expected a date will be set later this week.
Our thoughts are with his wife Wendy and the Hillier family at this sad time and we offer our deepest condolences.
Checking the Count
The are two signs on entry to the Gunning village stating that it has 530 residents. These differ from the Hume Highway sign which indicates 1000.
I am often asked by visitors which is correct count. The highway sign relates more to the district and reflects numbers when the by-pass was opened. The others refer directly to inhabitants of the village and requires more investigation.
With continuing low housing interest rates and a push from Canberran’s for a tree change, you would expect that villages numbers would differ from these signs.
A quick check of the 2016 census), at http://www.censusdata.abs.gov.au/census_services/getproduct/census/2016/quickstat/ reveals two figures.
One is for the Gunning urban centre which reflects the town boundaries and has the count at 543 which is very close to the signed 530. The other is a total of 659 for the Gunning district.
With the addition of small acreages close to the town boundaries, a few more could be added to the village numbers with still more houses to be completed.
Have Your Say About Rail Trail
While Gunning is not directly connected to the proposed Goulburn to Crookwell Rail Trail, its creation offers tourism and economic development opportunities to the whole region.
