Spectators, many from out of town, including a large number from Sydney, enjoyed a full day and evening action-packed program of thrills and spills at Goulburn’s 50th anniversary rodeo on Saturday. Among the organisations assisting Goulburn Rodeo Club on the day were Goulburn Pony Club, Parkesbourne Community Volunteers, Towrang RFS, Goulburn Prostate Cancer Support Group and Tirranna Public School.
The Goulburn Rodeo Club’s 50th Anniversary Rodeo and ABCRA Championships was a huge success with record spectator numbers and the weather was favourable throughout the event.
Spectators enjoyed events from 10am right through to 9pm with no delays or setbacks. The transition from timed events like the steer undecorating and roping conducted at one end of the arena to the rough riding events at the other were very quick.
The junior events were conducted in the morning sessions, while the novice events followed by the open events were held during the afternoon and into the evening. Once all the competitions wrapped up country music performer Roo Arcus took to the stage at the foot of the hill to round out a great day’s entertainment.
In the arena everything did not go the competitors way with plenty of highly fancied previous winners failing to make time or make a catch.
In the open bull ride just one rider, Michael Beard managed to stay on for the entire eight seconds. He took out the major prize with a 72 point ride and this was after a delay in the chute with an uncooperative bull.
In all, successful competitors shared in over $17,000 in prize money.
Last year’s winner of the over 40s bull ride, Jason Webb could not repeat his luck on a bull that quickly dispatched him to the ground.
It was Scott Miners miners from Cooma who took the prize with a thrilling 76 point ride in round one of the competition.
The novice bull ride went to Dylan Weir for the second year in a row he was presented with the Wayne Robson Memorial Buckle by Wayne’s brother Brett.
Wayne was known as a mentor for young people and he was an accomplished local horseman and rodeo rider but he died of bowel cancer. Also there to congratulate Weir were Wayne’s mother Shirley and his niece Mackensi Robson Tate, who placed fifth Junior Barrell Race riding “Pepper”. Weir was one of four novice contestants trying their luck in the open bull ride.
The best of the saddle bronc riders was Shaun Reid with a spectacular ride that had the camera shutters clicking.
In the junior steer riding 8 – u11 winner was local competitor Bailey Searle and the 11 – u14 competition went to Kade Attenborough.
Former local, Jodie Craig won the steer undecorating.
The team roping was won by Warren and Chelsea Byers and Brittany Besant won the breakaway roping.
In barrel racing, the ladies open competition was won by Michelle Bush, novice went to Billie Stenhouse, under 8s to Bob Wilson, with former local Chance Norton second and the 14 – u18 juvenile went to Montanna Williamson.
Goulburn Rodeo Club president Jeff Rowson said the committee was very happy with the way the event unfolded and with the attendance form both local people and out of town visitors.
“On behalf of the club I would like to say a massive thank you again to all the sponsors and volunteers,” he said. “Also to local organisations assisting on the day including Goulburn Pony Club, Parkesbourne Community Volunteers, Towrang RFS, Goulburn Prostate Cancer Support Group and Tirranna Public School.”
