Day two of the U14 Trinity Gold (aka ‘The Girls’) versus Trinity Blue (aka ‘The Boys’) cricket match had Gold chasing down the Blue’s first day 250 plus run total. It was not to be. Gold went down fighting over two innings that saw some excellent bowling from Blues players Matt Seaman (4 wickets), Sam Minehan, Brendan O’Rourke (who bowled sister Elke for an excellent first ball duck) and Matty Tremble. Chris Dyring sent down some excellent deliveries as did Evan Liversidge. Isaac Stanberg was at times unsure what he was bowling, also confusing the girls. The Matthew’s brothers, with coach/father Tim’s words of wisdom ringing in their ears are also starting to bowl well. Jack ‘Mac’ looked great in a pink tutu and bowler hat.

The Gold(en) Girls, resplendent in pink for the Pink Stumps Day fundraiser, tried hard but couldn’t overcome the determined bowling. The Regterschot sisters, and O’Rourke sisters got starts of sorts, but couldn’t go on with the job. International recruit Bronwyn Webster, fresh from a stint of German cricket, also found the conditions difficult. Hannah Wehbe and the ‘Two Macs’, Grace McNaughton and Em ‘Macca’ McCormack enjoyed the occasion, looking great in pink, and scored a few runs. Sophie Moroney held out her brother Charlie’s bowling but fell to a great catch by Matty Seaman.
Thanks to the Trinity teachers, parents and team coaches who put on a barbecue and pink cupcakes for the McGrath Foundation Pink Stumps Day and for which over $880 was raised.
U15 Women’s 20/20 carnival
Sunday, February 18, was the third and final day of the Inter Association U15 women’s 20/20 carnival with Goulburn taking on South Coast in the first game, and again in the third v fourth play-off.
Goulburn found scoring difficult in the first innings, managing 51, but failing to bat out the 20 overs. Captain Bella Greig led the way, compiling 31, including five fours. In reply, South Coast’s openers ran down the total in under 10 overs.
After lunch in the Seiffert Pavilion, it was over Prell Oval to see if Goulburn could improve on the first game in the third against fourth playoff.
Both teams put on an excellent display in the second game, with South Coast compiling 122 off its 20 overs. All Goulburn bowlers learnt from the first game and bowled tidily with Greig (0/13 off 4), Emily Secomb (1/25 off 4), Elke O’Rourke (1/36 off 4) and Rhaine Pik (1/4 off 2 overs) the wicket takers. Sophie Moroney was 0/9 off 2. In reply, Goulburn started steadily with Mikayla Johns again amongst the runs with 29. Niamh O’Rourke provided her best display of batting in all forms this season and carried her bat to be 23 not out. However, with Captain Greig out cheaply, Goulburn found the increasing run rate difficult to maintain and fell 40 runs short of the South Coast total. The batting display was much improved however, with Bridgette Anable also compiling eight not out.
The overall winners of the carnival were Shoalhaven who defeated Far South Coast in the final.
The three rounds of cricket showcased some very promising cricketers, and it is highly likely that several players from across the tournament will go on to higher honours in senior cricket in the coming years.
It is difficult to thank all those who helped with the tournament, but special thanks to The Tiveys, the Jollife’s, Danny Yeadon, John Edwards, Anne-Maree Shepherd, umpire Stuart Wearne and the Garry Mortimer Cricket Academy for their help across the three weekends. Thanks also to Goulburn Mulwaree Council, coaches and parent helpers for making this a great inaugural U15 women’s cricket carnival.
