Continuing to gain as much experience as possible throughout the season, Willmington’s dedication to perfecting his racecraft to suit his Sprintcar is certainly starting to pay off, as evident in last Saturday night’s latest Development Series round at Sydney’s Valvoline Raceway, where he came away with the feature-race win.
Heading into the race meeting with confidence in their car setup, Willmington and his team’s focus was fixed firmly on his driving performance, which saw him earn the pole position start for the 20-lap feature race, by virtue of clean sweeping his two heat races, before taking the early lead after what was a disjointed start to the race and going on to claim a dominant victory.
“It’s been a fairly tough season so far, but everything came together for us on Saturday night, which allowed us to come away with the feature-race win and also gain some invaluable experience,” said the 19-year-old racer, who is based in the small town of Marulan in the Southern Tablelands of NSW.
“We had three complete restarts before the feature race got going, so I got some great practice in starting off pole, as well as having to navigate lapped traffic without hesitation and pass cars as quickly and cleanly as possible.
“Overall, it was a really great learning experience for us and we’re looking forward to building on this knowledge throughout the rest of the season.”
Also contesting selected Speedcar shows this season, Willmington has scored a number of competitive results, including a pleasing third-place finish in the NSW Title at Valvoline Raceway earlier this season and an 11th-place result in the recent Australian Championship at Murray Bridge Speedway in South Australia.
Having sold his Speedcar following the Australian Championship, Willmington is seeking a drive for the rest of the 2017-18 season. Anyone with a drive offer can contacted Willmington on 0400 222 811.
Throughout the remainder of the season, Willmington plans to get as many laps under his belt as possible and continue working on his driving style aboard his NSW # 89 Garrett-powered Spike car.
For his next appearance, Willmington will travel to Moama’s Heartland Raceway this Saturday night, before heading to Geelong’s Avalon Raceway the following weekend (March 3). He also hopes to make it to Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway for the final Eureka Garages & Sheds Series round on the Saturday night of March 10, before finishing off his season back at Valvoline Raceway.
Willmington would like to thank the following 2017-18 season sponsors for their support: Castrol, Xtreme Auto Parts, Sledgehammers Apparel Australia, Spike Chassis, and Rixon Shaw. Special thanks go to his mum and dad (Natalie and Garry), Alan Shepard, Ashley Anthony, Paris Davies, and Craig Marshall.
