Hibo Green skipper Dane Stevenson won the toss and elected to bat in good cricketing conditions.
Kurt Southwell and Rory Heffernan opened the batting for the Greens and built the score watchfully against some tight line and length bowling from Brad Smith and Mik Webber.
Southwell was first to go with the score 1/26 when he was caught Jimmy Anderson bowled Webber for 16. Stevenson joined Heffernan at the crease and these two continued to bat watchfully, but safely guiding the Greens to 124. Then Stevenson was bowled by Brad Mitchell for a very well made 50 runs featuring solid defence with a nice array of attacking shots to keep the scoreboard ticking over.
Heffernan continued to thwart the Hibo Gold bowlers and build the Greens score to 3/165. He was bowled by Smith for a very solid innings of 58 in a good display of concentration and shot making.
Jordy Wilcox continued on the scoring with an attractive knock of 35 in quick time that saw a timely increase in the run rate. This enabled the Greens to finish with 6/201 off their 45 overs.
Webber was the best Gold bowler with 2/31 off his 9 he received good support from Smith with 1/31 off his 9 and Jimmy Kent bowled very precise line and length to return 0/22 off his 9 in a good effort for his team. Brad Mitchell made a welcome return to the game and took 2/46.Good to see you back Booey.
The Gold run chase did not start well with Luke Hayward and Jordy Wilcox each claiming a wicket to have Gold at 2/26.
Skipper Smith then joined Jimmy Armstrong at the crease and these two restored the Gold innings to parity by mirroring Heffernan and Stevenson’s innings for the Greens with rock solid defence and pouncing on any loose deliveries to build the score to 3/96. Stevenson had Armstrong caught for a very solid and valuable contribution of 33.
The Gold score was continuing to build nicely but on 116 Smith was out lbw to Stevenson for a very well made innings of 50, which was ironically exactly the same score as opposing skipper Stevenson.
This was a pivotal dismissal, as Smith had looked solid and the remaining Gold batsmen tried hard adding handy runs, but Gold lost wickets steadily to be all out for 152 giving the Greens a deserved win.
A key factor for the Golds was an unfortunate fielding accident causing Ben Staples an injury that necessitated treatment and resulted in him having to move from his specialist number four batting position to number 11.
Good luck Benny on behalf of both teams we wish you well and a speedy recovery.
Stevenson completed a very good double for the Greens returning the figures of 9 overs 3/25 with his spin. He received great support from youngster Archie Wearne, who snared 3/12 off his 5 overs of leg spin. Heffernan took 1/3 to chip in and finish the Gold innings.
This was a good, hard fought, cricket match with both sides tuning up for the semis, which means that irrespective of the last round Hibo Green will play Workers Stags in the major semi final and Hibo Gold will play Crookwell in the minor semi final.
These matches will be played on March 3. The winner of the major semi will advance to the grand final while the loser will play the winner of the minor semi final in the final on March 10, with the grand final on March 17.
