A key item of business is voting on the formation of a committee to help select the next Bishop, says Dean of Saint Saviour’s Cathedral, The Very Reverend Phillip Saunders.
Current Bishop, Stuart Robinson, will officially lay down his staff at a special service at 11am on Easter Saturday. Archbishop of Sydney, Glenn Davies will be among the many attending. On Good Friday, Bishop Robinson will walk with the cross through Belmore Park.
He announced his resignation last December. On May 5 he will be inducted as priest at Saint Michael’s, Vaucluse and Rose Bay. He and wife, Jane opted to move back to Sydney to be closer to his ageing mother.
The Very Reverend Saunders said the committee would vote on a replacement Bishop later in the year. Members could either search for candidates themselves or accept nominations from the diocese.
“I’ve known Stuart for more than 13 years and we worked very closely together,” he said.
“(I’ve admired) his entrepreneurial skills and passion for establishing a new communion of faith and willingness to deal with issues of sexual abuse.”
The synod, to be held at the Goulburn Workers Club, will also deal with recommendations from the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.
