Mr Prentice plays regularly around town with various bands, including The Hang every Tuesday night at the Goulburn Railway Bowling Club.
He is also in another band called Garth and The aPrentices and plays solo shows as well.
Mr Prentice also now has a staggering 50 local students that he regularly teaches guitar, bass and drums to.
He teaches out of the Goulburn Regional Conservatorium, where he also coordinates the d a rock band program.
Hailing originally from Tamworth, prior to Goulburn he was based in Newcastle.
“I grew up around the country music scene. My family is musical – dad plays the guitar and I remember many nights playing around campfires with them,” he said.
“I started playing in a band when I was 14 and the started gigging when I was 15 – we were not great but people let us play in places.”
He said blues is his main passion, but he is a versatile musician.
“Blues is my main thing but I play rock and country as well and I also sing and play bass in bands and orchestras – so I cover multi-genres including classical and jazz, as well,” he said.
Apart from teaching at the Goulburn Regional Conservatorium, he also does an outreach program that see’s him regularly travel to schools such as Tallong, Tirrana, Dalton, Gunning, Crookwell and Trinity Catholic College.
“There seems to be an explosion of kids wanting to learn guitar and bass,” he said.
“Goulburn has been good to me. I am very busy. It is a great place for musicians – as a rural community there is more music here than I expected when I first moved here three years ago.”
“The Con does a great job with the young guys and there are lots of musos around. We do about 160 concerts a year, which I think is amazing.
“I also run a ukulele group and the rock band program at the Con. I am in charge of the little bands. When they reach a certain skill level we put them in a band to play with others and they also get the opportunity to perform live – at the Con and in the community as well.”
He is playing at the Argyle Inn, Taralga on March 25 from 1.30pm and also on March 23 at the Goulburn Club with the Mike Baker Organ Trio.
