Prices were relatively stable from July to mid-September, at 152.7 to 152.8 cents per litre, but the Australian Institute of Petroleum says national average retail prices have risen 21.7 percent over the year to date.
The Australian Consumer Commission (ACCC) says petrol price cycles are the result of deliberate pricing policies of petrol retailers, and are not directly related to changes in wholesale costs.
If consumers believe a fuel retailer is not competing fairly, they can make a report to the ACCC online.
