Darren Basterfield, Geoff Dine, Geoff Evans, Craig Deaton, John Richens and Ralph Hush are aiming to complete the 96km long trek in nine days.
The Kokoda Trail entered Australian folklore during World War II, when diggers and allied troops fought pitched battles with Japanese soldiers in the jungle.
For Mr Hush, the trail's historical value was the main attraction for completing the walk.
"We've read a lot of books on it, so we have some idea of what the young soldiers went through back in World War Two when they were on the Kokoda Track.
"We're carrying our own packs, so we'll know with the heat, the humidity and the weight of what they went through."
