The Bryant's Bakery café building and the Clints Crazy bargains store went with it.
A report from the Goulburn Post at the time said the blaze is believed to have started when a wool bale full of rubbish in the back lane was set on fire.
The fire got into a gas regulator, which shot flames into the Clints store, which had much flammable material inside.
Fire crews from Goulburn, Moss vale, Crookwell and seven Mulwaree Rural Fire Service tankers fought to blaze from about 9pm until 11.30pm.
According to eyewitness reports at the fire's height, flames "danced" high above the building and paint cans from inside the store were exploding and firing across Auburn Street like bullets.
