However the fire in bushland between the Goulburn Speedway, the local tip and the Governors Hill caravan park destroyed some two hectares, and made life difficult for fire fighters.
Campers at the caravan park were told to pack up as flames emerged over the slope above.
Park visitors reported fireworks at the speedway going off 10 minutes before the fire appeared, but this has not been established as a cause, according to the Rural Fire Service (RFS).
Twenty-three fire fighters, including nine RFS units from Towrang, Mulwaree Support, Middle Arm and Tarlo rushed to the outbreak at 10.15pm, according to Inspector of learning and development for the RFS Southern Tablelands Zone, George Shepherd.
