Fireflys, undefeated all season and experienced campaigners, took the game to the young guns of North Blues and the game started at a frantic pace with both teams looking to earn the ascendancy.
Fireflys hammered North Blues defence but were unable to penetrate the halves of David Chambers and Nathan Brayshaw. North Blues also applied pressure on the Fireflys defence but Steve Downey showed his experience and broke their raids down.
Fireflys finally broke the deadlock as they converted a short corner. North Blues hit back hard and scored to lock the game up but just on half time the Fireflys’ pressure told and the old heads entered the sheds 2-1 up.
Reassuring words from the Blues coach saw them lift in the second half and for a 20-minute period pushed the Fireflys to breaking point.
However, experience eventually told as Steve Downey was able to hold his team together and counter with two quick goals.
Aaron Kerhaw, Scott Grant, Steve Downey and Shaun Anable were strong all game for Fireflys while for North Blues Aaron Grandovskis, Geoff Selmes, Jason Brayshaw and Aaron Dooley were outstanding.
The Goulburn Men’s Hockey Association thanked the umpires who controlled the grand finals and the parents, players and supporters for their help throughout the season.
