IT took Des Rowley 51 years of playing squash to win an Australian Championship medal, but hopefully his second won’t be too far away.

Rowley competed in last month’s Australian Squash Masters in Hobart and left brandishing a gold medal for the 70-74 age group.
Not only that, but he was the only New South Welshman to pick up a title at the masters tournament, which gathered over 600 competitors from around the nation.
He wasn’t the only successful Goulburn player though, as Stephen Fry finished runner up in the 50-54 age bracket, and Cheryl McQuillan, Del Salter and Desley Rowley competed in the teams event.
Rowley only just scraped home in the last match of the round robin series, as a single loss meant several competitors were tied on wins.
However, Rowley triumphed with the best scores throughout the tournament.
“It was all very close, I only won the tournament in my last game,” Rowley said.
While Rowley was over the moon with his achievement, he said the championship was just as much about socialising as playing squash.
