Colin Jewell and his team at C.C Jewell Quality Builders won the ‘Residential Aged Care’ category of the awards for their work in constructing the new Mary of the Cross apartments on Upper Sterne Street. Owner Colin Jewell told the Post that he was pleased by the joint effort of his builders and the other subcontractors involved.
“It’s the first time we’ve won one of these awards, and it feels pretty good,” he said.
“We were up against some pretty stiff competition, so it was good to come away with an award.”
The aged care facility cost $1.7 million to construct and was completed in July last year, with the official launch held on October 30. It features eight, one-bedroom, self-contained units for the use of elderly members of the Sisters of St Joseph order, as well as a communal kitchen, laundry and outdoor area, and a chapel.
Each apartment also has its own individual kitchen and courtyard. The building team took out the $1-3 million category and beat seven other finalists from across the state. Roof Tiler Dennis Granger of Brickscape Roofing and brickies Hayden Neale, Andrew Baxter and Tony Smereczanski of BNS Bricklaying also won awards in the subcontractor category for their work on the project.
Mr Jewell said he thought it was the close attention to detail and finishing touches that got the local team over the line. “I just think it was the quality of the finish, and the end result was very close to the tender price, which is another thing they look at.
“It also kept close to the construction program.”
The client managing this build was Sr Karen of the Sisters of St Joseph, and she told the Post she couldn’t have been happier with the work.
“What a pleasure to have Colin Jewell and Garry Dutaillis working on the project. We’re very happy with design and the outcome,” she said.
Mr Jewell thanked his team for their hard work in building the new apartments, and congratulated them on their success.
