It was travelling in a northbound direction past the corner of Dalmeny Lane and the highway near Carrick.
Police told the Post that the driver smelt smoke, and looked in his rear-view mirror and saw flames coming from the petrol tank.
He then pulled over and evacuated his family to safety. Two gas bottles in the trailer exploded, causing a small grass fire on the verge and fence-line of an adjoining property.
Towrang and Marulan RFS crews were on scene within minutes and extinguished the blaze.
The highway was closed in both directions from approximately 4:15pm.
All lanes were re-opened by 5pm. Traffic was banked up for about one kilometre.
