“I’m always getting caught up in the moment and carried away with it,” the singer-songwriter explained.
“Whether you’re going for a surf or doing anything you are using the tools you’ve got to get in to the moment. For me the guitar has always done that. It has connected me with the zone I need to be in to create something.”
Deeply philosophical and inspired by the subtle complexities of everyday human existence, his six-string is vestal for trapped emotions to flow out. He plays the way he feels and as a result it is impossible to pigeon hole his music, fluctuating from folk, soul, blue grass and blues through to alternative rock.
“I just sit down and start playing and it comes out the way it sounds.”
His latest EP, ‘Perfect Moment’, features four stellar tracks that show his diversity as an artist.
Penned on the road during last year’s US Tour and recorded in Sydney by ARIA-nominated producer Lachlan Mitchell – who also recorded The Jezabels – it has a much bigger sound than his previous releases.
During a recent interview with the Post, he said he was inspired by the theatre shows he had done, working with large scale bands, and he really wanted encapsulate that on record. However, he was simultaneously conscious of the fact that he wouldn’t always have an entourage when he toured, so the songs would need to work equally as both ensemble and acoustic arrangements.
Each song was inspired by a different place he visited but is written abstractly, so it will sound different to every listener based on their own experiences. The title track, he explained, was written after a trip to Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach.
“I had an epiphany while I was in the surf,” he laughed.
“It was just a beautiful blissful day and I was looking back toward the beach and my girl turned around and she was smiling and it was just perfect.”
The new EP tops off a whirlwind 12 months for the musician, playing to packed houses across Canada and Germany, campaigning as a musical ambassador for respectful relationships in Australia and completing three successful national tours. He even wrote a song for Matt Groening’s hit US animated series, Futurama.
Wolfe will kick off his national tour tonight when he performs alongside local talent Royce Davies at the Goulburn Club. He is no stranger to the club, he has played there numerous times, including as part of the Australian Blues Music Festival, and says he can’t wait to reconnect with his fans.
He promised a chilled out evening, full of fun, good vibes and great music.
