Since the team's round eight loss to Belconnen, the Redbacks have knuckled down to business, notching three consecutive wins and averaging three goals a game.
Despite getting to the front earlier than expected, coach Gary Lennon isn't getting carried away.
"Yeah we're at the top of the table but now hopefully we can stay there until the end of the season," he said.
Lennon wants to consolidate the advantage this weekend.
"We've got Gungahlin who pushed ANU on the weekend, only losing 1-0, so it's an important game for us and one that we should win at home."
The coach wasn't overly thrilled with the performance of his charges but told the Tribune he was excited about the level of confidence within the side.
"We scored in the first 15 minutes and went into cruise control."
"We should have put the game to bed but they always looked comfortable, even when they equalised late in the second half there was no panic and Chris Jamieson scored the winner.
"The boys weren't worried and that rubbed off on me, so even when Brindabella scored you got the feeling that we'd still respond and they did."
Lennon explained that the defending champions are playing what's in front of them.
"They've got a number of gears now that they can call upon, and that's exciting as a coach because I can see what they're capable of."
Both the Division 7 and the Division 8 teams are working on their finishing at training and with five goals between them at the weekend (including the 3-3 draw in second-grade), it seems to be working.
Lennon explained that goal-scoring would still be the core focus for the next three weeks but attention would then turn to a "clamp down on free kicks and corners".
The coach reiterated that there were five or six second-grade players on the fringe of call-ups to the top squad and come semi-final time Division 8 members will be permitted within the rules of the Capital Football to make the step up regardless of the number of games they have played for the first-grade side.
Both teams play at home this weekend, taking on Gungahlin at Walker Park from 1pm.
