In an announcement outside Goulburn Hospital this morning, Opposition Leader Luke Foley pledged that Labor would immediately commit $20 million for site acquisition and planning for the new hospital.
$250 million for the new Goulburn Hospital would then be reserved out of Labor's A Better Way infrastructure plan.
Mr Foley stressed the funding would not rely on electricity privatisation.
"Labor will build a new Goulburn Hospital without privatising electricity," he said.
"The historic Goulburn Base Hospital is no longer a suitable site. A new hospital will provide the health services needed to support the local ageing population in the years to come.
"This announcement is a huge win for the local community. We know that simply upgrading Goulburn Base Hospital will not meet the needs of the growing population."
The new hospital will include an emergency department and consolidate services including medical, surgical, paediatrics, intensive care, gastroenterology, psychiatric and rehabilitation.
Final decisions on the project design and funding will be made following the planning process and consultation with the local community and medical staff.
Construction will begin once site acquisition and planning is complete.
The new Goulburn Hospital is supported by Labor's plans to recruit 840 new nurses as part of its nurse to patient ratios policy and 500 paramedics across the State.
An "overpromise" says Skinner
NSW Health Minister Jillian Skinner has hit back at Labor, labeling this morning's $270m hospital announcement as "typical Labor - overpromise and underdeliver".
The announcement was crashed by three young Liberals, touting "Labor = no new hospital" placards.
