They have been studying a book written by Stephanie Owen Reeder called Lennie the Legend: Sole to Sydney by Pony.
This amazing true story retells the adventures of a nine-year-old Lennie as he makes his way, on horseback, from Leongatha to Sydney to witness the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1932. The amazing part of this story is that he travelled alone.
Principal of Gunning Public School Danny Scott said the students connected with the story because Lennie is about the same age as many of them and also because he actually stayed in Gunning in 1932 on his adventure.
“The students were thrilled when they had a visit from none-other than Stephanie Owen Reeder herself,” Mr Scott said.
“They were thrilled to have the chance to ask questions and listen to such a wonderful author.”
The author’s visit was made possible through the work of Rosemary Thomas.
