A former Salvation Army officer charged with 27 historical sexual assault offences has had his case adjourned.

Former Goulburn captain Russell Robert Walker, 74, appeared at Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday facing 22 counts of indecent assault on a male, two counts of buggery, one of procuring an indecent act with a male, one of indecent act with a male and one of aiding, abetting or procuring indecent assault.
Strike Force Lehmann, comprising officers from the State Crime Command’s Sex Crimes Squad, charged Walker at Waterloo on November 2. The Strike Force was formed to investigate allegations of sexual abuse at Salvation Army boys homes in Goulburn and Bexley.
Walker served at Goulburn in the 1970s.
Thursday’s was his second court appearance. He did not enter a plea when he appeared before Magistrate Graeme Henson. His bail was continued without variation. The court granted Walker bail on November 3 on condition of a $5000 surety; that he not be in company of any child under the age of 16 years unsupervised by an adult; that reside at Waterloo and; not enter any international airport or other point of departure from Australia or leave NSW.
Magistrate Henson adjourned the matter to March 2, 2017 for a brief mention. Walker will not be required to attend if legally represented.
Another former Salvation Army officer, John Dalziel McIver, 77, who also served in Goulburn, has been charged with six counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, four counts of common assault and two charges of indecent assault on a male.
His case has been adjourned to Downing Centre Local Court on February 23, 2017 for mention.
